Merchants 2023

In order to meet the requirements of the labour market, VET programmes are periodically reviewed and adapted to economic, technological, ecological and didactic developments. This also applies to basic commercial training. After being repositioned in 2003, it was last moderately revised ten years ago. With the Merchants 2023 project launched by the Swiss Conference of Commercial Training and Examination Sectors (SKKAB) in 2017, basic commercial training has now been fundamentally reformed and adapted to the needs of the labour market.

The reform Merchants 2023 is based on a comprehensive occupational field analysis. It shows: tomorrow's merchants act in agile forms of work and organisation, interact in a networked work environment and work with new technologies. This requires technical skills and a digital mindset, social and personal skills as well as critical thinking and creativity.

The new basic commercial training is consistently geared towards competences for action. It enables learners to deal with changes in the economy and society and to engage in lifelong learning. Our credo: No matter what the future brings - business people are prepared for it.

The State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) conducted a consultation from January 2021 to April 2021. The results of the consultation clearly show that the basic commercial training revised by the sponsoring body has met with a positive response overall from the cantons and third parties.

The implementation measures have got off to a successful start. For example, the national general education curriculum, the implementation concepts for the vocational schools, the report on the organisational models, the implementation provisions for the qualification procedure, the activity-based learning media for vocational school teaching and other implementation aids are now available.
